According to the 2017 Worldwide Office Printer and Supplies Forecasts from Virtulytix, Business Inkjet Cartridge Revenue will exceed Consumer Inkjet Cartridge revenue by 2020

All of us in the imaging industry are well aware of the impact of a relatively new breed of inkjet printers that are challenging laser printers in the office.  Unlike the inkjet printers that many of use in our home offices, these business printers are very fast, some using a single print head extending across the width of the print media (i.e. HP Pagewide technology, Epson Line Head technology), some offering very high capacity cartridges or bottles (in the case of Continuous Ink Supply Systems) suitable for high volume printing, and most offering significant cost per page advantages over consumer inkjet printers.   By 2020, despite the fact that unit shipments of consumer inkjet printers will continue to be greater than shipments of business inkjet printers, business inkjet cartridge revenue will overtake consumer inkjet cartridge revenue for the first time.  Understanding this consumer/business inkjet cartridge mix shift is critically important to Office Products OEMs, distributors, and resellers because office printer supplies represent 80% of total worldwide office printing revenue (60% ink and toner, 20% media), while hardware represents only 20%.   This is just one of the insights provided in the 2017 Worldwide Office Printer/Supplies Forecasts and Forecast Perspectives.

According to the company’s President, Scott Hornbuckle, Virtulytix is on the leading edge of advanced analytics with the specific goal of “making the Industrial IoT smart!”. While the company is new, it is leveraging the experience of a group of seasoned industry executives including:

Scott Hornbuckle, President, built the Advanced Analytics team at Photizo Group as the group’s director. Scott has a unique combination of advanced analytics expertise, customer understanding, technical expertise, and business management skills which make him the logical choice to be ‘face’ of Virtulytix.

Mario Diaz, VP Consulting, another 30+ year veteran of the technology industry with key management roles at QMS, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Avnet, and IO Datacenters. She has a rich background in Data Analytics and work experience with ABN AMRO bank in India. Besides her certifications, she has strengths in statistical concepts like multi-variate regression, decision trees, and clustering.

Allison Zhang recently graduated from the University of Cincinnati, Carl H. Lindner College of Business with a Master of Science in Information Systems. Along with her Master of Science in Accounting and software skills in SAP, SPSS, SAS, SQL and Tableau, Allison will be a specialist in developing advanced analytics solutions.

Allison and Nameeta both are joining an existing team of project management and data engineering professionals who have been successful in building industrial IoT solutions using a variety of platforms and technologies including Mike Huster (Project Management Director) and Eric Crowley (Sr. Data Engineer).

Photizo Group Launches Enterprise MPS Loyalty Study in North America and Europe

As the Enterprise market (firms with more than 1,000 employees) becomes increasingly saturated with MPS, the importance of retaining existing clients and identifying clients of your competitors who are willing to switch becomes critical. In fact, for North America alone, Photizo Group has identified that $8B of the $11B MPS opportunity is in further penetrating existing accounts. Only $3B of the total opportunity is associated with capturing ‘new to MPS’ accounts (Photizo Group 2016 MPS Advisory Service Forecast). The maturity of the enterprise MPS market means keeping customers is critical, but there is a catch.

Research and analysis into MPS customer defection rates by Photizo Group indicates that 33% of MPS contract holders are considering either switching MPS vendors or bringing their outsourced MPS project internal. With one third of the customer base open to change, it’s imperative that vendors understand whether this represents a threat (their customers switching to other vendors) or an opportunity (to capture their competitors MPS customers who are considering switching).

According to Ed Crowley, CEO of Photizo Group, “Many vendors are making a serious error in assuming that their existing customer loyalty or satisfaction study is adequately identifying threats to their customer base. Without an understanding of how your customer satisfaction and loyalty compares to your competitors, it’s easy to overestimate the strength of your customer relationships.” Photizo Group is launching this study to assist clients in addressing this serious information gap and to identify growth opportunities in competitors’ accounts by identifying the types of customers who are most likely to switch.

The multiphase study begins with a quantitative study of Enterprise MPS customers in the USA, Canada, Germany, France, and the UK. It is followed by in-depth interviews to understand the critical dynamics associated with satisfaction and switching behavior. The study launches in early April with clients who sign up by the end of January having the opportunity to impact the study design and content.

Report and Analysis on HP’s Acquisition of Samsung’s Printer Business – Checkmate or Castle?

October 27, 2016, Lexington Kentucky – Photo Group today announced the availability of a new 54-page report on the rationale and industry impact of HP’s acquisition of Samsung’s printer business announced on September 12, 2016.

This report initially looks at possible reasons that Samsung Electronics decided to sell their printer business given that it is a known fact that printers where very strategic to them and they set very ambitious goals to become a leader in the market.   Samsung’s current 5% share in the printer market, economic conditions in South Korea, and the costly problems with the Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone are all discussed in detail as possible reasons for selling their printer business.

The report then examines possible reasons why HP decided to purchase Samsung’s printer business including laser technology access, 6500 laser and inkjet technology patents, access to 1300 skilled hardware, software, and firmware engineers, a production facility in Seoul, and incremental revenue and profits from the Samsung product line to at least partially offset most recent declines in HP’s printer revenue and profits.

Will the acquisition be successful?   HP has a good track record of acquiring printer companies and successfully growing those businesses especially when they are allowed to operate a bit independently.  The acquisition of Indigo in 2001 is a great example of a business that successfully grew after being acquired by HP.  The report addresses that challenges that HP will face including how to integrate the Samsung product line into the HP product line particularly from a channel standpoint.

Of the 16 new A3 Laser MFPs announced on September 12, 2016, 13 are based on Samsung print engines.  The six new low end monochrome single function and multifunction printers announced by HP on October 5, 2016 are based on Canon, not Samsung printer engines.  The report talks about how much the Samsung A3 product line, at least what exists today, will help HP’s efforts to break into the Copier/BTA channel especially given the positioning of HP’s PageWide A3 products.

The report then addresses the impact of this acquisition on the industry.  First and foremost, the balance of power between two market leaders, Canon and HP, has now shifted in the favor of HP, now that HP has acquired a laser printer product line and laser/inkjet related patents.   Now HP’s product breadth is as broad or perhaps broader than Canon’s.   HP’s A4 and A3 PageWide product line is expected to be very disruptive in terms of price/performance, perhaps more so against established A3 Laser MFP providers including Canon.  Will HP continue to purchase print engines from Canon after the latest round of low end products announced on October 3, 2016 now that they have their own laser technology?

Photizo LinkedIn Group Grows to More Than 10,000 members

On September 20th, the LinkedIn™ site Imaging Industry Transformation: MPS, ADS, Predictive Analytics, 3D Printing and More surpassed 10,000 members. This group was established in 2008 by the Photizo Group to provide a vendor neutral ‘watering hole’ for industry executives to share information, communicate upcoming events, and post job opportunities. Originally the site was called the Managed Print Services site, but as Photizo Group’s coverage and focus expanded to the entire imaging industry ecosystem, the name was changed to help members take advantage of the expanded charter.

The Imaging Industry Transformation LinkedIn group is the first group to be used to an industry association.  In 2008 this LinkedIn group was used to conduct initial voting to launch and establish the Managed Print Services Association (MPSA).
