Forecast Perspective: Ink Jet Printers, Second-Half 2012

Larry Jamieson

Although the ink jet printer market recovered in 2010 after difficulties in 2008 and 2009, an 8 percent decline in ink jet printer shipments in 2011 started a long-term downward trend that will continue through the forecast period. The global recession masked other factors, such as fewer placement opportunities, Wi-Fi networking, and screen-based applications, and managed print services engagements are targeting the replacement of ink jet machines with toner-based devices. In general, business practices are moving away from printing and using electronic information whenever possible. Business-class ink jet printers and MFPs, which use page-wide-array technology to deliver fast speeds, may drive new opportunities for ink jet but will not change the overall direction of the market.
